Our Sheep
Cheviot
Our main flock is Cheviot (Chevy-ut) sheep, a breed that originated in the high hills between England and Scotland, combing the steep hillsides for all available food and even grazing through the snow. These “hill sheep” thrive high up on the ridge where we live and they are truly dual-purpose with dense and clean medium wool and prime meat characteristics. They lamb independently and are excellent mothers, and their lambs are born with a will to live. They are parasite resistant and are alert and intelligent. Since Cheviots are bred by selection and not crossing, they consistently pass these characteristics on to their offspring. They are shorter and slower growing than modern improved breeds, but if you look at yield of clean wool and trimmed meat per acre, they come out ahead. Furthermore, the wool comes off cleaner and the meat requires less trimming so it is ideal for the shepherd who wants to do it themselves.
Our goal for our Cheviot flock is to let the harsh conditions of the hills in the winter and late summer grow a naturally healthy and self-sufficient sheep with good conformation that is solidly dual-purpose. We are selecting for sheep that can graze year-round without hay, and grow well without inputs like medications, vaccines, and grains, while maintaining productivity and aiming for a 100% lamb survival rate.
Cheviot "Mule" Ewes
(BFL × Cheviot)
A highly productive ewe with the robustness of the Cheviot dam and the desirable wool, larger size, milkiness, and improved twinning rate of the Blue-Faced Leicester (BFL) sire. A flock of Mule ewes paired with a terminal sire will have fast-growing prime meat lambs, and they are excellent mothers that are healthy, vigorous, and have abundant attractive wool. Mule ewes make an excellent commercial flock and are good for any shepherd that doesn’t want to lose money on a small flock.
Our Rams
Cheviot Ram "Roy"
Roy is a thick ram with a long straight back and a neck like a bull. He was the top ram of the award-winning Depping Cheviots in Walla Walla, WA where we purchased our original ewes when the Deppings retired.
Blue-Faced Leicester Ram "Salt"
Salt is a large-framed ram that has long wool with very nice crimp and he is the dominant ram in our flock. Salt is the sire of the Cheviot mule ewes. His lambs are born with good weights and grow fast on pasture.
Suffolk × Hampshire Ram "Clyde"
Clyde is a gentle young ram that is bred to our Mule ewes to produce meat or market lamb.
